Leopards have figured prominently in the legends and lore of disparate cultures, especially on the African continent. Of the many stories repeated in the west, How The Leopard Got His Spots is probably the best known. Rudyard Kipling included a version in his work Just So Stories, but several more authentic accounts exist.
In one, a kind and noble leopard comes to the aid of a frightened tortoise, who finds himself stranded in a tree after an unsuccessful attempt to gather fruit. The graceful animal leaps into the branches and returns the terrapin safely to earth. He even shakes fruit out of the tree for the grateful stranger, who is eager to return the favor.
The next morning the tawny cat returns to the site of his good deed, and the tortoise deftly paints spots all over his coat. The leopard is quite pleased with the results. To this day, all of the animals in the jungle aim admiring glances at their beautifully adorned brother.
