Argyle was originally the signature tartan worn by the Campbell Clan, who hail from Western Scotland. The unique pattern of solid diamonds overlaid with intersecting diagonal lines may trace back to the Campbells, but versions of argyle have been displayed in the knee socks of kilted highlanders since the 1600s.

After World War I, the Duke of Windsor began to appear publicly in argyle socks and jerseys whenever he decided to play a few rounds of golf. It didn't take long for the well-heeled on both sides of the pond to follow suit. To this day both professional and amateur golfers can be seen walking the links dressed in the design, although argyle is by no means confined to country clubs alone: it now routinely adorns everything from umbrellas to stationary.
