Susan Koerner helped in her family's farm-based carriage shop in Indiana throughout the 1830s and 1840s. Her open-minded father quickly recognized his daughter's talent and taught her to use tools and do equations. Later on, she earned top scores in math and science at nearby Hartsville College.
After Susan married in 1859, she routinely designed and built household appliances. She also constructed sleds and other toys for her children--among them two very inquisitive and mechanically-inclined sons named Wilbur and Orville Wright.
Whenever the young inventors were stuck, they trudged from their workshop into the house to ask their tech-savvy mom for advice. Years later, Orville Wright said, "We were lucky enough to grow up in an environment where there was always much encouragement to children to pursue intellectual interests; to investigate whatever aroused curiosity."
