Bubble gum was an accident invented by an accountant named Walter Diemer.

In 1928, the twenty-three year old was dutifully crunching numbers by day for the Fleer Chewing Gum Company in Philadelphia, but his spare time was spent experimenting with their recipes. Several messy failures later, Diemer stumbled onto something interesting. This gum was less sticky. It was also very stretchy.

In short time Walter was blowing bubbles. He took a big lump of the stuff to a nearby candy store, where he demonstrated its curious properties. The merchant sold out in a single day.

Executives at Fleer knew a good thing when they saw it. They made the product pink because it was the only food coloring in stock. Diemer patiently taught all of the salesmen how to blow bubbles.

Dubble Bubble was an instant hit, but the gum didn't make its inventor rich: Diemer chose not to publish the patent, stressing that inventing the product was good enough for him. After his retirement, he often hosted bubble-blowing contests for kids in his neighborhood.

The cozy patched coverlet consists of chunky blocks of both striped and free-form circle prints interspersed with chocolate microsuede and cuddly pink velour. The blanket is piped with chocolate.

Four separate bumpers alternate all four fabrics and are backed with the same design. Each piece is piped with luscious dark brown and finished with matching ties. A neatly tailored circle print dust ruffle is trimmed with the snappy awning stripe and includes a crisp center pleat. A soft pink cotton jersey sheet completes the group.

You won't have to chew over this one long to know it is a real winner.
