In 1903, ninety-eight individual circuses and menageries toured the nation annually, many of them stopping in sleepy rural areas that were still fairly cut off from the rest of the country. The circus was much more than entertainment--it was a major event in the life of the community.
Normal activity ceased. Schools and shops closed. Farmers abandoned their fields. Everyone flocked to the grounds outside of town, gawking as sweaty workers erected big tents and handlers fed exotic animals. Performers practiced their acts for the crowd--a very sly way to boost ticket sales. Years later, old men and women consistently identified the experience of watching the circus set up as one of their happiest early memories--a rare chance to glimpse an enchanted world.

A smiling lion looks on. In the background, the blue, yellow, and red striped big top beckons beneath a cloudless azure sky. Each lively applique is outline quilted for maximum "pop".
Light green bumpers repeat images of the performers and tent. Each sturdy section is piped with bright red and backed with a cozy gingham of light blue and white. A bright red dust ruffle and soft fitted sheet complete the linen group.
