Theodor Seuss Geisel was doing pretty well when he found himself transfixed by an article in Life magazine in May of 1954.
He and wife Helen made it through the depression in good shape, thanks to his work creating catchy advertising slogans and then producing his first children's book, To Think that I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937. After active-duty service in the Army's Animation Department during WWII, Geisel resumed writing for kids and enjoyed considerable critical and commercial success.
The piece in Life that caught his attention discussed the alarming rate of illiteracy among American school children, asserting that they weren't reading because they didn't like the books they were offered.
Textbook editor William Ellsworth Spaulding came up with a list of 348 short words he thought all first graders should be able to readily identify. He asked Geisel to whittle it down to 250--and then write a book using only those words.
After a long struggle, The Cat in the Hat was born.
Trend Lab's cheerful and snuggly collection salutes the now world-famous feline who has helped generations of boys and girls learn to love books.
This affordable easy-care set is dominated by large fields of homey black and white gingham. A cheerful mix of red, sage and azure cotton and cuddly textured velour, along with a lively Seuss scatter print, only adds to the merriment.
Intentionally asymmetrical horizontal widths of all fabrics give the quilt its delightfully quirky "Seussian" feel. The iconic cat peeks mischievously from the blanket's corner.
Four separate bumper pads alternate blocks of both solid and print material. Each section is backed with the same design, piped with gingham, and finished with matching ties. The gently gathered gingham dust ruffle contrasts nicely with the other pieces. A well-fitted cotton scatter print sheet completes the group.
Warning: this cozy ensemble is apt to leave your little one clamoring for a bedtime story.
