In the Autumn of 1973, teacher Mollie Brown began what she thought would be a normal Social Studies lesson for her second grade class at Lulu Ross Elementary School in Milford, Delaware. Brown and her children read an article about Maryland's decision to adopt a species of butterfly as their official state bug, the first state to officially adopt a bug.
Mollie Brown's students thought that Delaware should have a state bug, too. After some thought, the kids voted for the ladybug.
After several months of work (and considerable help from older students ), Brown's class dressed in ladybug costumes and marched into the Delaware legislature on April 25, 1974 to make the case for the insect. The children pointed out that ladybugs eat aphids, thus protecting many fruit trees--including peach trees.
The peach blossom had long been the state flower of Delaware. The bill passed unanimously.
