Many Americans assume that quilting in this country has always been a strictly female activity. Just plain wrong. Some very macho men have constructed beautiful patchwork.
During the colonial period, boys routinely learned needlework as children, stitching together skins and furs used to store dried food. They also made moccasins. Both skills were learned from Native American men who had sewn for centuries, generally using thorns and porcupine quills.
Even during the extreme hardships of slavery, African-American men made quilts, too. These works, some of which pre-date emancipation, were displayed at the Smithsonian Institution in a 1998 exhibit entitled Man Made: African American Men and Quilting Traditions.
Civil War soldiers and cowboys (black and white alike) carried needles and thread with them, first when they fought valiantly, and later when they moved west to herd cattle and sheep. Like the early mountain men, these guys sewed their own bedrolls.
Move over, ladies: Men today win blue ribbons left and right at quilt shows across the nation. A well-oiled sewing machine appears to be the other power tool.
Trend Lab's splendid Max collection will definitely make a powerful statement in your sleepy boy's nursery. This package of soft and durable masterfully crafted patchwork linens combines tonal blues and browns in soft easy-care microsuede, cotton, and velour fabrics. Decorators will love the very affordable price almost as much as the design.
The adorable coverlet is a lively mix of polka-dotted, striped and solid blocks. Solid chocolate and caramel microsuede and cuddly azure velour add depth and delightful texture to the ensemble, which accounts for its successful fusion of modern flair and old-fashioned coziness.
The four sectioned bumpers employ the striped pattern and are topped with a generous width of the large dot print. Each piece is piped with solid chocolate and finished with matching ties. A neatly pleated polka-dotted dust ruffle is trimmed with widths of chocolate and stripes respectively. A soft light blue sheet completes the group.
The perfect choice for any rough and ready retreat. What's Included
