As First Lady, she founded a committee to work on beautifying the Capitol, and later expanded the program to include the entire nation. In 1982 she established the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, which continues in its mission to encourage young and old gardeners alike to fill spaces with indigenous plants.
