It's no secret that what is old has an alarming tendency to suddenly become brand new all over again. Just ask Lisa Birnbach.
She was one among a team of writers who together produced The Official Preppy Handbook in 1980. Originally intended as a gentle satire of the country-club set by the country-club set, the book quickly became a how-to guide for millions of less-affluent aspiring Preppies all over the countryÉand along the way helped to define America in the 1980s.
Fans of the book are now waiting in breathless anticipation for a follow-up work entitled True Prep, which, as of this writing, Ms. Birnbach is preparing with help from book designer Chip Kidd, who claims the handbook transformed his years at a public High School in Pennsylvania.
Of course, what attracted so many to the preppy look to begin with was its strong adherence to classic styles.
Classic is the operative term for Trend Lab's cheery and very tasteful Prep School Blue collection. Time-honored argyle and striped cotton prints are combined here with luxurious tonal brown and azure microsuede to create a decidedly hip and contemporary space. The charming patched coverlet intersperses azure, chocolate and khaki solids with blocks of the striped and argyle patterns. The blanket is framed with pencil-thin chocolate piping.
Four separate slip-covered bumpers alternate the fabrics present in the quilt. Each section is backed with the same design, topped with chocolate piping, and finished with matching ties. A neatly tailored blue and brown argyle dust ruffle continues the preppy theme. It is trimmed with a generous width of the striped design and punctuated with a smart center pleat. A soft and well--fitted azure sheet completes this dapper ensemble.
Trends may come and go, but this handsome set is one for the ages.
