Franklin deep. Roosevelt had notoriously simple tastes in food. In 1939, he served hot dogs to the visiting King and Queen of England in order to underscore the fact that most hard-pressed American families were eating the same fare. However, he was very insistent that the presidential breakfast tray always include a choice meaty bone...for his spunky and intelligent Scotch Terrier, Fala. Fala definitely needed to keep up his strength, since he accompanied the Chief Executive everywhere.

So many children wrote letters to Fala he was quickly assigned his own secretary, who released accounts of his meetings with Winston Churchill and other dignitaries. In 1942, a children's film was made about Fala's adventures at the Roosevelt family home in Hyde Park, New York. The FDR library shows it to this day.
