Terminology is often a murky thing. What many (but not all) Americans call sprinkles are no exception.
If you live in the eastern states, then you probably call the chocolate form of this "micro candy" jimmies. Westerners have been known to refer to the multi-colored incarnation as ants. In the past few decades, the latter have been added to the mix by home bakers who have folded them into batter, thus ushering in the very popular "confetti cake".
The Dutch started eating what they call hagelslag (literally "hail") on their buttered bread (most often for breakfast) beginning in 1936, when Volk company employee Gerard de Vries responded to a series of letters by a little boy named high. Bakker, who told de Vries he longed to eat a little chocolate in the morning. Hagelslag remains a staple on breakfast tables in The Netherlands, neighboring Belgium, and the former Dutch colony of Indonesia.
In England, New Zealand and Australia sugar strands or hundreds-and-thousands are poured on everything from frosted cakes, to chocolates and fancy iced cookies. Aussies and New Zealanders also occasionally treat their children with a bit of fairy bread -- which consists of liberally buttered white bread coated thickly with the rainbow version.
Most fans worldwide do agree that the tiny decorative sweets date to eighteenth century French confectioners. The first versions of what these pioneers called nonpareils (literally "unequaled") were plain white, but began a trend that has yet to subside.
Bacati's buoyant Sprinkles collection supplies everything needed to create one delectable nursery. Dazzlingly luxurious easy-care 300 thread count cotton sateen bedding in a lively mix of white, bright red, yellow, and tonal purples will leave satisfied smiles all around. Better yet, the fine craftsmanship on display in this cozy gender neutral set guarantees that it will stick around long enough to nurture yet another lucky baby.
The reversible throw features a wide field of pristine white, masterfully quilted with a lovely small loop design. The blanket is bordered with a generous width of red and includes Bacati's painstakingly mitered corners--a loving touch not often seen in crib linens these days.
The sturdy wrap around bumper highlights the vibrant sprinkle scatter print. Each adjoining section is backed with the same effervescent pattern. The entire piece is piped with red cording and finished with matching ties. A neatly tailored scatter print dust ruffle includes a crisply-executed center pleat. A soft well-fitted red sheet completes the group.
A sweet and blessedly affordable treat for your equally sweet and very sleepy baby.
