In 1991, when photographer, producer and surfing enthusiast Elizabeth Pepin returned from a two year stint working in the U.K., she was delighted to discover that the number of women walking around with surf boards had increased dramatically during her absence.

Pepin, who learned to surf in the mid 1980s, had long been aggravated by the unapologetically macho attitude of most male surfers. None of them seemed to understand that women and girls have been riding the waves alongside their male counterparts since the sport first appeared five thousand years ago.

Polynesian legend and song celebrates several accomplished female surfers like Kelea, whose great skills on a board won the heart of an Oahu chief. Ka-ahumanu, the favorite wife of King Kamehameha I, was considered one of the best surfers of her generation. Near Waikiki, the beach called Ke-Kai-O-Mamala (the sea of Mamala) honors the ancient Oahu chieftess who knew a thing or two about hanging ten.

Pepin was inspired to take photos of the most recent generation of surfing moms and daughters, all of whom defy the bikinied blonde "surf chick" stereotype: The wetsuited wave riders captured by her lens come in every color, shape, size and age. Pepin's collection has been shown in museums around the world, and is now contained in a critically acclaimed book entitled Surfing Women of the Waves.
