Tartan. Nice pattern and nothing more? Think again.
The Dress Act of 1746 actually banned tartan for thirty-six years, in an attempt to halt the ongoing territorial disputes between Scottish clan leaders--all of whom wore their own specialized tartans. In the 1820s, authors like Walter Scott ushered in a Highland Romantic Revival and enthusiastically adopted tartan as a symbol of Scottish pride. When Queen Victoria and Prince Albert bought Balmoral Castle in 1848, they promptly outfitted the entire Scottish palace with tartan--making it a must-have for the rich and fashion-conscious.
After a several generations as the choice of the British aristocracy and military, tartan took a rather unexpected detour. In the 1970s, punk rockers all over the U.K. began to wear pointedly ragged tartan garments to register their angry rejection of the status quo. Even though most Punkers have long since traded in their multiple piercings and purple Mohawks for steady work, tartan continues to show up in interesting contexts, adorning everything from baseball caps to dinner plates.
Patch Magic's masterfully crafted Tartan Log Cabin collection represents yet another incarnation of this design. These soft and durable cotton linens are combined with the time honored log cabin pattern to create a charmingly rustic but very vibrant ensemble.
The key to the heirloom quality quilt's success is the adept placement of diverse plaids in a host of rich reds, golds, greens, and blues. Narrower plaids rest next to wider patterns, resulting in an impressive sense of movement. The diamond shapes in this log cabin configuration are surrounded by a border of fabric strips placed on the diagonal, which further heightens the set's energy.
The bumpers repeat the quilt's pattern. Each section is piped and backed with a lush blue and green plaid. A gently gathered red and black plaid crib skirt and soft fitted sheet complete the linen group.
Tuck your lucky baby into this luxurious but profoundly cozy tartan bedding. Bagpipe lullabies are optional.
